Turmeric and Ginger Chai for Cold Weather

This is the tea to kick colds in the ass, and it is also pretty tasty.  I happen to have access to fresh turmeric at the moment, but if you don't have anywhere to get it (like, say, if you are living in Newfoundland!) you could use turmeric powder - the flavour just won't really be the same. Turmeric and ginger are both immune system heroes, so a dose of this on a cold winter day keeps the sniffles at bay!

Be careful with fresh turmeric, it stains everything. Some people like to wear gloves to work with it, but if you are using organic turmeric you can just keep it unpeeled and hold onto the skin to grate it to avoid most of the hand-staining.

In a saucepan combine:

1/2 cup almond milk or other milk
2/3 cup water
1 tsp grated fresh turmeric (or substitute 1/2 tsp powder)
1 tsp grated ginger
4 cardamom pods, smashed
a pinch of fennel seeds

Heat on medium to a simmer and then reduce to low, cover the saucepan, and let the mixture steep for about 10-15 minutes. Strain the liquid into a cup and add 1/2 to 1 tsp unpasteurized honey to taste.

Makes one cup.

  1. I'm a big fan of turmeric tea as well. Even a tsp of the powdered spice with plain boiled water is surprisingly delicious. It's anti-inflammatory :-).

  2. I know! So good! I hope you try this with fresh turmeric sometime…while the powdered stuff is great, the fresh spice is heavenly!
