November 15th's Garden Haul o' the Day

My cat Minnie is very curious about human food! She seemed to be really keen on the chard, for some reason.

Garden haul, November 15th, 2010, St. John's Newfoundland (climate zone 5b!)

Clockwise from top left - baby chard and beet leaves, baby kale leaves, large pile tender young broccoli heads, parsley (tons more out there too!), basil and yellow tomatoes from greenhouse.

That broccoli is the hardest working plant in my yard. I was given 3 seedlings as a gift in late June, and I would wager that each plant re-cropped at least 10 times after the main head was cut off. I had gotten some late broccoli mini-heads from the same friend, months ago now, that had turned bitter (same type of plant, different location...different soil? air temp?). Mine are still sweet, and still growing! I picked most of what was left today because I can feel the chill in the air, but this is really one of the biggest successes of my garden this year...seeing as I didn't even think they would grow in my teeny little raised beds.

Today's eats will include steamed broccoli with herbs and garlic and a splash of olive oil, and a wilted greens salad: chopped kale/chard/beet leaves massaged with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, thyme, salt and pepper, then left to soften...topped with seeds and raisins, it's deeeee-licious.
